Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emission targets for UK
This sections shows how the UK's legally binding emission targets compare to the CO2 stabilisation trends.
These legally binding targets are shown in the chart below as the "Agreed cut" line. Note that this is for UK emissions cuts to meet 2 legally binding targets:
- the Kyoto Protocol, which gives us an internationally agreed target of a 12.5% Greenhouse Gas (GHG) cut by 2012
; - And for an 80% GHG cut by 2050, which was made law in the Climate Change Act 2008.
To be consistent with the C&C model run, I have assumed a target path starting in year 2000 (with flat lines before 2000 and after 2050).
- The "Agreed cut" target line assumes that CO2 reductions will be the same as the overall GHG reduction targets (see later pages for corrections and discussion of new targets from the 2009 budget).
- Notice all cuts are compared to emissions in 1990 - the "baseline year".
- With these assumptions our current target path would put us between the C&C modelled 450 ppm and 750 ppm emission stabilisation lines.
